While airports dedicated to business aviation are generally considered a great boon to private travelers, they don’t always enjoy the best of relations with their neighbors. The threat to close the Los Angeles-area Santa Monica Airport is a prime example of this dilemma, but it doesn’t have to be this way, as we found while visiting london.

Biggin Hill Airport enjoys a prime location, within easy reach the heart of the U.K. capital, and offers six-minute helicopter shuttle transfers into the city. It competes with other London area airports, including Farnborough, Luton, London City, Stansted, Gatwick and Heathrow.

The airport needed the support of the local community in what is a densely populated London suburb to get permission to extend hours, and it doesn’t take that for granted. The prospect of creating more local jobs was a big factor, and that in part came from the opening of new aircraft maintenance facilities, including Bombardier’s new European service center.

Wealthy people in England are booking private jets to escape the lockdown set to be introduced on Thursday, according to jet brokers. Air Partner, one of the biggest aircraft charter firms, said there had been a sharp rise in private jet bookings out of the country before Thursday, as people look to avoid the lockdown and instead spend the time overseas. The company, which supplies planes to Premier League footballers, celebrities, the royal family and six out of the eight governments in the G8, said it had been overwhelmed with enquiries from wealthy people seeking to escape the UK for second homes overseas. Many of these flight enquiries are for individuals wishing to go to their second homes in Europe, with the Canary Islands, which are still warm at this time of year, being the most sought-after destination, the company said in a statement. We do expect to continue to see some demand for private jet flights during the rest of the month for business travel, particularly as many commercial flights become grounded and unavailable. The new lockdown in England, which is expected to come into force on Thursday, will ban residents in England from travelling abroad except for essential work until at least 2 December. Air Partner said that to depart before lockdown for five people from Biggin Hill airport to Tenerife would cost around 24,000 one-way. Commercial airlines have dramatically reduced their flight schedules in anticipation of an even greater fall in demand for international travel, which has been moribund since the pandemic began. However, private jet operators have reported a much smaller decline in bookings. The operators say this is because the richest of the rich have continued to travel as much as before. In addition, more moderately wealthy people are seeking out private jets as they view it as a safer way to travel during the pandemic because it avoids potentially crowded commercial planes and airport terminals.

Wingly is a flight sharing platform which allows hobbyist pilots to share the cost of their flights with passengers.

We went from London to Le Touquet, France, from Elstree Aerodrome on a Piper Arrow II P28R-200.

The flights should have cost £109 per person which includes fuel, landing fees, and Wingly’s service fee. However, we didn't pay for the journey.

Critics say that the service isn’t safe enough and worry that it is exploiting a loophole which allows pilots without commercial licences to carry passengers as they're technically not paying the pilot for the journey, they're sharing costs – like carpooling.

Wingly is legal and is certified by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in the UK.

It operates in the UK, France, and Germany, and has plans to expand to the rest of Europe.

This programme has discovered that a deportation flight chartered by the Home Office yesterday was carrying just one Sudanese man, who was taken to France under an international agreement which means migrants are sent back to the first safe European country they registered in.

The Home Office says more people were due to be deported, but were allowed to stay after last minute legal challenges.
